Cancer Center Quality and Accreditation

Our team is committed to offering each patient compassionate, expert cancer care. In 2018, we provided approximately:

  • 17,000 patient visits
  • 10,800 infusion treatments
  • 8,900 radiation treatments
  • 1,700 new patient consults

Because of our commitment to quality care, we have received multiple accreditations from the Commission of Cancer (CoC) and received favorable data-driven reports regarding patient outcomes from the Cancer Quality Improvement Program (CQIP). Additionally, our nursing staff’s expertise continues to pave the way for quality patient care.

Commission of Cancer Accreditation

Since 1953, the Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital has continuously received the Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation from the American College of Surgeons. This accreditation is given to facilities that the CoC determines are committed to providing the best in diagnoses and treatments of cancers, both of which are compliant with evidence-based national treatment guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Our team was able to receive this recognition due to the high quality care our team provides patients through services such as:

  • Access to cancer-related information
  • A team approach to care
  • Education and support
  • State-of-the-art equipment

In 2019, the Mass General Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley again achieved full accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program (CCCP).

Data from the Cancer Quality Improvement Program

The Cancer Quality Improvement Program (CQIP) is a data-driven, process and outcomes-based cancer quality improvement initiative. It confidentially reports data from the National Cancer Database to 1,500 individual CoC-accredited hospitals, which includes comparisons of national data versus all CoC-accredited programs.  Learn how the Mass General Cancer Center compared to the national benchmarks for outcomes related to breast cancer and colon cancer.

Quality and Expertise of Nursing

New cancer treatments always are on the horizon, and our nurses are dedicated to keeping up to date with them to provide patients with the best possible outcomes. In fact, our Infusion Center nurses complete an initial and annual chemotherapy and biotherapy competency each year.

Additionally, our Infusion Center nurses and nurse navigators have completed:

  • The Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Infusion course
  • Their Chemotherapy/Biotherapy administration certification
  • An Oncology Nursing Certification or Advanced Oncology Nursing Certification (100 percent of our nurses have acheived this highest level of specialization)
