College Volunteer Program

How do I become a volunteer?

We currently have a waitlist for the Summer 2025 program.

Availability of positions may be variable. Late afternoon (after 4pm), evening and weekend positions are very limited. Boston area college students interested in general volunteer opportunities must commit to volunteering for at least 2 full semesters.

Our staff members and volunteers all make mutual commitments to provide quality service. Because of the time we spend to train our volunteers, we expect a minimum of 2-4 hours of volunteer service each week, depending on individual assignments. This is equivalent to a total minimum commitment of 50 hours over two semesters for college students.

Acceptance into the volunteer program is contingent on satisfactory results of the interview, occupational health screening, background check, and other information provided by the volunteer.

What to expect during the application process

Complete an NWH Volunteer Application

  • Applications for the 2025-2026 academic year will be accepted beginning in August 2025. Once the application is submitted, you will receive an automated email with instructions about scheduling an interview.
  • Volunteer interviews are scheduled from Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 p.m.
  • Interviews are virtual and take place via Teams and last approximately 30 minutes. During the interview we will talk about your interest in volunteering, availability for volunteering, and positions that are currently open. Applicants will receive the Teams link at least 48 hours before their interview.
  • Applicants who are accepted into the program will need to provide documentation of the following vaccinations: MMR, Varicella, current Flu Shot, Covid-19 primary series.
  • Applicants will also need to complete a TB Spot test or skin test within 90 days of their start date.
