Ben Chelminsky works in the kitchen of the Hillside Cafe on the campus of Boston College. Starting when he was 14, Ben worked as one of our volunteers until he was 22. Over the years, Ben volunteered in many areas of Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH), including the:
Ben learned about our volunteer program at the hospital from a friend, and it fit nicely with his family’s plan to help Ben gain vocational experience. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities.
The vocational skills that Ben learned and built upon at NWH have enabled him to move on to paid employment. As he expanded his skills and became more independent in the workplace environment, he was able to apply what he had learned to other environments.
“Ben has been fortunate to have gained so much vocational experience and support at Newton-Wellesley Hospital,” Ben’s mother said. “His eight years of work experience at NWH enabled him to get into the much-sought-after program in the kitchen at Hillside Cafe.”
