Francois’ Story

A workforce development success story

Francois Joachim is our Lead Transport Technician at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where he has worked for nearly 10 years. Francois came to the United States from Haiti in 1989. He always wanted to become a U.S. citizen, but he had to overcome many obstacles to do so.

Francois’ Workforce Development Path

In 2010, Francois saw a promotional poster for our U.S. Citizenship Program — one of our many Workforce Programs available to our employees. Francois knew this was his best chance to achieve his goal of citizenship. Prior to enrolling, Francois took advantage of our English for Speakers of Other Languages program.

What Has Francois Gained From These Programs?

“When I came here from Haiti more than 20 years ago, I had the desire to become an American citizen, but in reality, it was always a challenge,” Francois said. “It was a challenge until this citizenship program, with its classes and wonderful teachers, gave me the opportunity and made it easy for me to succeed. Attaining U.S. citizenship was important to me, because this is where I live and work, and it is a way for me to be able to help my four children and other relatives who still live in Haiti.”

Because Francois has obtained his U.S. citizenship, it has eased the long and difficult process of being able to bring his children to live with him in the U.S. Francois hopes his kids, who have never been to the U.S., will soon be able to move here.
