Ying “Jennifer” Ou is a food service worker at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Jennifer came to the United States from China in 1997, and she started working at the Charlie’s on the Way café at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in 2007. She bakes muffins, scones, and cookies. On Fridays, she also makes sandwiches and salads.
When she first started working at the hospital, Jennifer did not speak much English, and she was very uncomfortable and nervous when she had to answer the phone or when a patient would stop her in the hallway and ask for directions. One of Jennifer’s co-workers in the kitchen had taken our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, which is one of our workforce programs, and she recommended the program to Jennifer.
“In 2010, I completed the ESOL classes, and now I am much more comfortable with my English proficiency,” Jennifer said. “I am no longer nervous, and I am happy to help patients find their way around the hospital. I can also communicate better with my manager and co-workers. I love my job, and the customers are very nice. I hope I can work here forever.”
