Mass General Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley is committed to offering patients quality care. Each year, our doctors conduct a cancer study to ensure that we diagnose and treat patients in ways that are compliant with the evidence-based national treatment guidelines by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and appropriate for the American Joint Committee on Cancer stage.
The annual study examines a specific type of cancer, which is determined by doctors from our Cancer Care Committee. The doctors work with one of our medical oncologists and radiation oncologists to review a random sample of patients in the prior year and determine whether treatments were effective — and if so, which ones were most effective.
Because each patient and their diagnosis is unique, care plans may not always follow expected guidelines and the process of our annual study. However, the subsequent review with the Cancer Care Committee generates discussion with providers across multiple specialties, helping ensure the best care for each patient. This study is done annually and requires hospitals to be accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) from the American College of Surgeons. Our team has been accredited annually for more than 50 years.
