Physical Therapy for Balance and Falls

Reducing fall risks and improving function in Greater Boston patients

Our physical therapists evaluate and treat adults with movement problems related to dizziness, falls, or difficulty with balance or walking. We provide a comprehensive assessment of fall risk for older people, as well as instruction in ways to reduce fall risk and optimize safety and function.

We will apply our knowledge of the anatomical and physiological changes that occur with normal aging to evaluate your underlying problems. Next, we will develop an individually designed rehabilitation program to improve your function and fitness and help prevent falls.

Conditions We Treat

A variety of health conditions can lead to problems with balance and falls. We can improve many of these conditions through physical therapy, such as:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Amputations
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Hip fractures
  • Lung disease
  • Neurological and balance disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Recovery from joint replacements
  • Stroke

Our Balance and Fall Services

The focus of rehabilitation is on optimizing mobility, balance and function. We will teach you home exercises to help you maintain the gains you make during your physical therapy. We address home safety through the use of safety checklists, and we recommend possible adaptations to improve home safety.

We incorporate the latest evidence regarding exercise and fall prevention strategies into your unique plan of care. Our rehabilitation facility includes many technological advances, such as body-weight-supported treadmill training (LiteGait) and functional electrical stimulation during walking (WalkAide). We also participate in clinical research studies focused on measuring balance and determining the benefits of new rehabilitation approaches to reduce falls.
