Orthopedics, Spine, and Sports Medicine Therapy

Our orthopedic physical therapists work closely with providers from our Orthopedic Surgery Service to care for patients with disorders of the bones, joints, and muscles. We offer physical therapy to patients with a number of orthopedic conditions, including:

  • Acute injuries, those involving a specific incident or traumatic event
  • Chronic conditions, those involving persistent pain or difficulty for longer than three months
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Post-operative care for spine surgery and total joint surgery

Evaluation and Treatment Plan

Your first appointment with us will include a thorough evaluation and interview. We’ll use the information we gather to help understand your condition and develop a personalized care plan. We’ll focus on the following goals for your rehabilitation plan:

  • Decrease your pain
  • Improve your daily work and recreational activities
  • Improve your strength and range of motion
  • Restore joint mobility and range of motion

After your first appointment, follow-up visits with your physical therapist will include the following activities to help you achieve your personal goals:

  • Education
  • Exercises specific to your condition, based on your initial exam
  • Manual therapies, including stretching, joint mobilization, and joint manipulation
  • Various pain-relieving treatments, such as ice, heat, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation)
Back, Neck, and Spine Pain

We offer quality physical therapy for patients with spine conditions and other disorders that cause back and neck pain. Research has shown that spinal manipulation by a physical therapist during the early stages of an injury to the neck, middle back, or lower back is an effective treatment approach.

If you have persistent back pain, we can reduce and manage your pain through a personalized exercise and education program. We also can decrease the risk of your back pain returning.

Some of the many spine conditions we treat with physical therapy include:

  • Disc problems, such as herniation or degenerative disc disease
  • Piriformis syndrome, an irritation of the sciatic nerve in the leg by the piriformis muscle in the buttocks
  • Radiculopathy, a condition that involves the root of a spinal nerve, such as a pinched nerve
  • Spine instability
  • Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, a disorder of the jaw muscles that can lead to jaw pain or difficulty chewing

We also can help you recover after various spine surgeries, including:

  • Disc replacement or debridement
  • Lumbar and cervical fusion
  • Spinal decompression surgery
Elbow Injuries and Pain

Physical therapy often plays a role in helping patients recover from sports injuries, such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis/lateral epicondylalgia) or golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis/medial epicondylalgia). For patients who are recovering from elbow surgery, our Hand Therapy Department often provides occupational and physical therapy.

Foot and Ankle Injuries and Pain

Many conditions and injuries of the foot and ankle can benefit from a personalized physical therapy regimen. Some of the many conditions we can help you manage include:

  • Achilles tendinitis/tendinosis, an inflammation of the Achilles tendon
  • Ankle sprains or instability
  • Arthritis
  • Fractures
  • Heel pain, including plantar fasciitis
  • Ligament tears
Hip Injuries and Pain

Our physical therapists have experience helping patients manage many types of hip injuries or other conditions, including:

  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), a condition in which the hip joint doesn’t have its full range of motion
  • Injuries to the labrum, a band of cartilage that surrounds the hip joint
  • Psoas impingement, an inflammation of a tendon outside the hip joint that can cause hip pain or a snapping sound in the hip
  • Trochanteric bursitis, a type of hip inflammation

We also can help you recover after a number of hip surgeries, such as:

  • Minimally invasive surgeries of the hip joint
  • Surgical repair of hip fractures
  • Total hip replacement

Knee Injuries and Pain

If you are experiencing pain from these or other conditions of the knee, our physical therapists can help:

  • Anterior knee pain, or pain of the front of the knee and the kneecap, including patellofemoral pain syndrome
  • Arthritis
  • Iliotibial friction syndrome (ITB syndrome), also known as runner’s knee, a type of overuse injury
  • Ligament injuries and instability, such as tears of the ACL, MCL, and other knee ligaments
  • Running injuries

Our physical therapists also can help you recover from a number of knee surgeries, such as:

  • Ligament reconstruction
  • Minimally invasive knee surgery
  • Meniscus repair
  • Surgical repair of knee fractures
  • Tendon repair
  • Total knee replacement

Shoulder Injuries and Pain

Physical therapy often plays a role in treating and managing shoulder pain and injuries, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Fracture
  • Multidirectional instability, a looseness of the shoulder usually due to the tendons being too loose
  • Rotator cuff dysfunction, including impingement, tears, and tendinitis/tendinosis
  • Scapular dyskinesis, an abnormal motion or function of the shoulder blade during shoulder movement
  • SLAP tear, a tear of the cartilage that reinforces the shoulder joint
  • Tendinitis/tendinosis of the biceps tendon, which attaches your biceps muscle to your shoulder and elbow bones

We also can help you recover from a number of shoulder surgeries, including:
