How to Prepare for a PET Scan

 

You should not eat for six hours before your test. (Diabetic patients may eat up to four hours prior to appointment time.) Drinking water is allowed and encouraged. It is recommended that the night before the exam you drink two to four glasses of water to ensure hydration prior to the exam.

Meal Ideas

Your last meal before the scan should be high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Examples include:

  • Dinner: steak, baked chicken, fish, cheese, asparagus, broccoli, and mushrooms. No pasta, potatoes, rice, or bread.
  • Breakfast: eggs, bacon, and sausage. You should not eat breakfast if you have an appointment before noon.

Medication

Continue to take any medication your doctor has prescribed. If you have been advised to take your medications with food, eat nothing more than a few soda crackers four to eight hours prior to your exam.

What to Avoid

Avoid caffeine, sugar, tobacco, and heavy exercise for 24 hours prior to your exam.

What to Bring and Wear

Make sure you have the following items:

  • Insurance cards
  • Medical history
  • Pathology reports
  • Previous CT scans, X-rays, and prior PET exams

You should wear loose, comfortable clothing. Your clothes should be free of zippers and snaps. Please do not wear jewelry to your appointment. Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
