We offer face and sinus CT scans at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where we use an X-ray to take pictures. Below are some common questions and answers pertaining to the exam.
Department of Radiology, Newton Wellesley Hospital 2014 Washington Street Newton, MA 02462 Phone: 617-243-6600
To prepare for a CT scan, please arrive 20 minutes before your appointment time, and don’t wear any facial jewelry or earrings.
If there is any possibility that you are pregnant or nursing a baby, please speak with your referring doctor before your appointment.
During the exam, most patients will lie on the table on their stomach, with their chin extended out on a cushion. For certain specialty sinus procedures, or for those patients that are unable to lie on their stomach, the procedure will be completed lying on their back. The table will rise up and move in and out of a large circle. Once the technologist positions you, it’s important to hold still. A few images will be taken so that the technologist can set up the area to be scanned. Once the scan is set up, the procedure will start. The scan typically takes anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes.
After the exam, a technologist will process your images. Then a radiologist will evaluate the images, dictate a report within 24 hours, and send a transcription of the report to your doctor, who will share the results with you.
