Hip Reconstruction Surgery

The Kaplan Joint Center surgeons have performed more than 6,000 hip replacements, providing patients with improved quality of life. Our surgeons are expert at:

Hip Arthroscopy:

A minimally invasive procedure in which the surgeon inserts a tiny camera through a small incision in the hip and views the joint on a video monitor. The cartilage or bone damage is repaired with a tiny instrument that is inserted through a separate portal. Hip arthroscopy is done as outpatient surgery and recovery time depends on the problems addressed in surgery.

Total Hip Arthroplasty (Hip Replacement):

Total hip replacement surgery is done to replace an arthritic or badly damaged hip joint with man-made parts. The man-made part is called a prosthesis and can be made of many different materials including metal, polyethylene (plastic), ceramic or a combination of these. Your surgeon will choose the prosthesis that is best for you. The goal of a total hip replacement surgery is to increase mobility and lessen pain.

Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty:

A hip replacement that has worn out or failed is replaced with a new implant.

Surgery and Beyond

The duration of total hip replacement surgery is typically between two and three hours, and depends on the condition of the hip, the patient’s size and which procedure is performed. Your surgeon will give you an estimate of how long the surgery will take.

Most hip patients spend from 2-3 days on the joint replacement floor— the Slotnick Inpatient Pavilion. The spacious, tranquil pavilion offers 24 private rooms with comfortable pull-out sofa beds for family members and large, plasma screen televisions.

Kaplan surgeons and the Joint Center’s internist follow up after surgery to ensure recovery goes smoothly. Patients receive regular physical and occupational therapy during their stay. Many of our physical therapists have specialty training and advanced certifications in orthopaedics, and can offer a recovery and treatment plan tailored to the patient’s post-operative needs. The therapy program emphasizes mobility, range of motion and strengthening. We also provide case management services to coordinate the transition home or to an extended care facility.

Local patients can continue their recovery process as an outpatient at the hospital’s new state-of-the art Newton-Wellesley Ambulatory Care Center - Newton which features an aquatic therapy pool.

Most of our patients are back to their normal activities from six weeks to six months after surgery, depending on their pre-operative health, specific procedure, physical therapy and other factors.

Our Hip Surgery Patient Guide gives an overview of what to expect before, during and after hip replacement.
