Weight Loss Treatments

We offer several bariatric surgery options. During our consultations with you, we will determine which option will be the best approach for you to achieve your weight loss goals.

Our Bariatric Procedures

The following are procedures offered at the Center for Weight Loss Surgery. We invite you to learn more about them:

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
  • Gastric Band Removal
  • Gastric Band Conversion
  • Duodenal Switch Procedure
  • Referral for body contouring (plastic surgical procedures after significant weight loss)

Understanding the different types of bariatric procedures

There are three basic aspects of weight loss surgery that promote the loss of weight: restrictive, metabolic, and malabsorptive changes.

Restrictive

Decreases food intake by reducing the size of the stomach (Lap Band surgery provides restriction alone to aid in weight loss).

Metabolic

Alters chemicals in the blood to change the perception of hunger and fullness by either removing part of the stomach and rapid stomach emptying, or by bypassing part of the intestine to deliver nutrients to the end of the small intestine more quickly. This also functions to increase insulin secretion and sensitivity (Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and bypass surgery aid by restriction and metabolic changes)

Malabsorptive

Alters digestion, causing food to be poorly digested and incompletely absorbed so that it is eliminated in the stool (Laparoscopic duodenal switch procedures can have some degree of malabsorption but that is not the primary mechanism of promoting weight loss).

We perform laparoscopic weight loss procedures that combine restrictive and metabolic components. We do not offer purely restrictive procedures, such as laparoscopic gastric bands (lap band) or vertical banded gastroplasty, because of their risks and poor long term weight loss outcomes.  However, we do perform lap band removal and lap band conversion to other weight loss procedures.
