Gastric Band Conversion

Surgeons in the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital perform gastric band conversions to more effective metabolic weight loss procedures. They first laparoscopically remove the gastric band, also known as a lap band. They then peform a laparoscopic conversion to either a gastric bypass or a sleeve gastrectomy.

Gastric bypass procedure

Sleeve gastrectomy procedure

Conversion or revision surgery can be performed in one of two ways:. It can be done at the same time as the procedure to remove the gastric band, or the band may be removed first and a second procedure performed at a later time can be for the revision to gastric bypass.

The method of a one-stage or two-stage operation depends on your preference, reasons for band removal, and your overall safety. Learn more about gastric band removal.
