Hand Surgery

Specialty care for conditions of the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow

Your hands rely on a complex system of bones, ligaments, and muscles to function. A condition that affects even one of these structures, whether in the hand itself or in the wrist, forearm, or elbow, can affect your ability to use your hands properly.

Our Orthopedic Surgery team at Newton-Wellesley Hospital has vast experience in caring for a wide range of conditions that affect the hand and related areas, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic pain
  • Dupuytren’s contracture, an abnormal thickening of the skin at the base of the fingers that causes the fingers to curl inward or sideways
  • Fractures and sprains
  • Ligament injuries
  • Nerve compression
  • Nerve injuries
  • Sports-related injuries, such as tennis elbow or golf elbow
  • Tendon injuries
  • Wrist pain

When to See a Hand Surgeon

You should make an appointment with one of our hand surgeons or ask your primary care doctor for a referral if:

  • You have a chronic condition of the hand, such as arthritis, that has recently gotten worse
  • You have sustained an injury that limits your ability to use your fingers, hand, wrist, or arm
  • You have tried treating the problem at home or with your primary care doctor and have not seen any/enough improvement
  • You notice any redness or swelling in the area
  • You notice sudden or severe pain in your fingers, hand, wrist, or arm

What to Expect from Your Hand Surgery Appointment

During your first appointment with us, your hand surgeon will talk to you about your condition and symptoms and perform a thorough examination. You likely will need imaging tests to help us understand the problem. These tests may include:

  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
  • X-rays

Your hand surgeon will use this information to diagnose your condition. Together, you and your doctor will decide on a treatment plan that is customized for your condition, concerns, and goals. Your treatment plan may include one or more of the following options:

  • A cast, brace, or splint
  • Hand therapy
  • Injections to reduce pain and swelling
  • Surgery
