Do I Have a Sleep Disorder?

It’s natural to have questions about whether you could have a sleep disorder, particularly if you’re not getting the deep, restful sleep you need. Use the following resources to help determine if you might be at risk.

Sleep Center, Newton-Wellesley Hospital
159 Wells Avenue
Newton, MA 02462
Phone: 617-243-5699
Fax: 617-243-6776

Sleep Questionnaire

Check any of the following items that apply to you, or fill out the print version of our questionnaire (PDF).

Do you (or have you been told) that you:

  • Snore heavily?
  • Have pauses in your breathing during sleep?
  • Wake up gasping, choking or short of breath?
  • Awaken with a headache that soon goes away?
  • Feel drowsy when you don’t want to (during meetings, driving, on the phone, etc)?
  • Feel tired in the morning, even after sleeping all night?
  • Have a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke or coronary artery disease?
  • Have a neck size equal to or larger than 17 inches (for women) or 18 inches (for men)?

If you have experienced two or more of the conditions above, you may have a sleep disorder.

Epworth Sleepiness Scale

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is used to determine the level of daytime sleepiness. You should discuss these issues with your personal doctor.

Situation Chance of Dozing or Sleeping
Sitting and Reading
Watching TV
Sitting inactive in a public place
Being a passenger in a motor vehicle for an hour or more
Lying down in the afternoon
Sitting and talking to someone
Sitting quietly after lunch (no alcohol)
Stopped for a few minutes in traffic while driving
Total Score (add the scores up)
This is your Epworth Score
Tally your score and select your range

If you score 10 or more on this test, you should consider whether you are obtaining adequate sleep, need to improve your sleep hygiene, and/or need to see a sleep specialist. Your doctor may order a sleep study so we can help determine whether you have a sleep disorder.
