Cardiac Electrophysiology

Expert care for conditions relating to the heart’s electrical function

Cardiac electrophysiology is a branch of cardiology that specializes in conditions that involve the heart’s electrical activity. Your heartbeat, or heart rhythm, is controlled by a complex system of electrical pathways in your heart. If these pathways are unusual or damaged, it can lead to irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) or other heart problems.

Specialists called cardiac electrophysiologists diagnose and treat conditions that involve the heart’s electrical system.

Our Cardiac Electrophysiology Procedures

Our doctors offer patients a full range of treatments for problems of the heart’s electrical system. These treatments include:

  • Cardiac electrical cardioversion, in which we deliver an electrical shock to your heart to convert an abnormal heartbeat to a normal one
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation, in which we implant a device that will monitor your heart rhythm and, if needed, shock your heart to restore a normal heartbeat
  • Permanent pacemaker implantation, in which we implant a tiny computer and battery under your skin to send electrical impulses to your heart in order to treat a number of heart problems

All of these procedures require similar preparations:

  • Don’t eat, drink, or chew anything after midnight before your procedure
  • Continue to take all of your medications on the day of your procedure unless your care team has told you otherwise. Take your medications the morning of your procedure only with a small sip of water
  • Bring a list of all your medications with you to the procedure
  • Make arrangements for an adult to drive you home after your procedure. The medications we give you during the procedure will make you drowsy, and you might not able to drive for 24 hours afterward
