Inpatient & Observation Admission Status

When you are admitted to the hospital, depending on how severe your condition is and the level of medical treatment you require, these will both determine the appropriate level of care to which you are assigned. The process of determining level of care helps us comply with Medicare, Medicaid, managed care plans and commercial payer regulations related to observation or inpatient status.

Being designated as an inpatient or as under observation does not affect the quality of care you receive; however, it may have billing and discharge planning implications.

Medicare Hospital Status

  • Medicare Hospital Status: What You Need To Know at Newton-Wellesley (pdf)
  • To request the Medicare & You Handbook call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visit www.medicare.gov/Publications/

  • You may also contact your insurance plan’s member services department.

Discharge plan

Case managers, also known as social workers, will assist you and your family in developing and coordinating a discharge plan when it is time for you to leave the hospital. The plan is based on your needs, preferences, insurance benefits and recommendations from your health care team.

Insurance benefits and Medicare

  • Understand your insurance benefits, including how this will impact your discharge plan.
  • If you are a Medicare subscriber, provide you with the telephone number to a quality review organization in Massachusetts to help answer questions you may have about your rights, including your right to appeal the hospital’s decision to discharge you.
  • Initiate an appeal should you disagree with your readiness for discharge or the discharge plan.
