When to Have a Mammogram

Yearly mammograms are important

We recommend that women begin having annual mammograms at age 40. Mammograms play an important role in detecting breast cancer at an early stage. Early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer increase your chance of successful treatment and outcome.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer because of family history and other factors have an MRI and a mammogram every year, typically starting at age 30.

For more information about when to have a mammogram, view “End the Confusion”, a whiteboard animation from the Society of Breast Imaging.

I Don’t Have Any Risk Factors. When Should I Have My First Mammogram?

The American Cancer Society, the American College of Radiology, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommend beginning regular mammograms at 40. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. While some believe that screening women in their 40s is not cost effective, experience and data show that mammograms significantly lower the death rate from breast cancer for women of all ages.

Younger women tend to have dense breast tissue, which can make early cancers difficult to detect. Fortunately, digital mammography has improved the ability to detect cancer. We believe that being able to detect and treat breast cancer effectively in a 40-year-old woman is worthwhile. Discuss the decision with your physician. Once you decide to be screened, we recommend an annual mammogram.

I Am 42 Years Old. How Often Do I Need a Mammogram?

We recommend yearly mammograms. Screening mammograms are performed to detect breast cancer when it is still small. If cancer develops and it gets an extra year to grow, we are giving up an important advantage. Also, when cancer develops in a younger or premenopausal woman, it may grow faster, so it is even more important for younger women to have yearly mammograms.
