A mammogram is used to detect and evaluate breast abnormalities. It is used to screen women who have no breast complaints or symptoms, and it is generally the first imaging evaluation chosen to evaluate abnormal signs or symptoms such as a lump, pain, or nipple discharge. Newton-Wellesley Hospital performs digital mammograms, which use X-ray detectors and a computer to create the image.
A screening mammogram is an exam used to evaluate breast tissue in women experiencing no symptoms. Mammography is very important in the early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast before a patient or physician can feel them.
A diagnostic mammogram is a term used to describe the mammographic images obtained when the patient has a problem discovered by her physician or by herself. It is tailored to evaluate the problem.
Tomosynthesis [link to Tomosynthesis, page ID 8.7.4.4], also known as 3D mammography, is new technology that allows the physician to see thin mammography sections of the entire breast. This results in better detail without the superimposed tissue above and below each section that can hide abnormalities on the traditional two-dimensional image provided by mammography.
