Laparoscopy

A minimally invasive option for gynecologic surgery

Laparoscopy is a procedure our doctors use to examine the organs in your abdomen and pelvis in order to diagnose gynecologic conditions. We can also use laparoscopy to treat these conditions through minimally invasive surgery.

Laparoscopy involves the use of a laparoscope, a thin tube that includes a video camera. Your doctor places the laparoscope through a small incision in the abdomen, and the camera sends images to a computer screen. If you need surgery to treat a condition, your doctor will place several small tubes in the abdomen and pass small surgical instruments through these tubes to perform your surgical procedure.

Laparoscopic surgery has several advantages over traditional open surgery, including:

  • Direct views of the internal organs
  • Less pain and blood loss
  • Faster recovery
  • Smaller incisions

Why Do I Need a Laparoscopy?

Many of our treatments that once required major, open surgery can now be done with laparoscopy. Some of the most common conditions we treat with laparoscopy include:

  • Endometriosis [link to Endometriosis and Adenomyosis, page ID 8.18.3]
  • Fibroids [link to Fibroids, page ID 8.18.2.18]
  • Ovarian cysts

You and your doctor will discuss your treatment options and decide whether a laparoscopic procedure is right for your condition.

After Your Laparoscopy

Your care team will discuss specific instructions with you following your procedure. Learn more about general information for recovering after your laparoscopy and what to expect after your surgery.
