Pelvic Pain Causes

Our Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Pelvic Pain Collaborative providers know that many different conditions can cause pelvic pain. The good news is that a full range of pelvic pain treaments are available here: medications, minimally invasive surgery, high-tech procedures, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, mindfulness, group support, cognitive behavioral therapy, and more.

We will treat you as the individual you are, with respect, caring and professionalism. We will customize our treatment plan based on the cause of your pain and your symptoms. We work together toward a common goal: relieving your pain.

Pelvic Pain Conditions

Here are some of the pelvic pain causes and conditions that we treat at the Pelvic Pain Collaborative.

  • Abnormal and/or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Adenomyosis: when tissue that normally lines your uterus grows into its muscular wall, causing cramps, abdominal pressure and heavy periods
  • Bladder pain
  • Central pain syndrome: a condition caused by problems with your central nervous system, which includes your brain and spinal cord
  • Endometriosis: an often painful condition in which tissue similar to that which normally lines the inside of your uterus grows outside your uterus
  • Fibroids: abnormal growths in or on your uterus that are typically noncancerous but can be painful
  • Ilioinguinal neuralgia: damage to your ilioinguinal nerve, which runs through your lower back, hips, groin and thighs
  • Interstitial cystitis: a condition that causes bladder pressure, urinary frequency, and pain
  • Intrauterine pathology (septum, fibroid, polyp, scar tissue)
  • Lichen sclerosis: an condition that creates thinner-than-normal skin that can affect your genital and anal areas
  • Neuropathic pain: stabbing or burning pain that comes from damage to or problems with your nervous system
  • Obturator neuralgia: pain on the inside of your thigh caused by damage to your obturator nerve
  • Ovarian cysts: fluid-filled sacs that grow in your uterus and can be painful
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Pelvic congestion syndrome: enlarged veins within your pelvis
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction: inability to properly contract or relax the muscles in your lower pelvis to control your bowel movements, urination, or engage in sexual intercourse
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Post-surgical neuralgia: persistent pain after having surgery
  • Pudendal neuralgia: pain in your vagina or rectum from damage to a main nerve in your pelvis called the pudendal nerve
  • Vulvodynia: pain or discomfort around your vulva, which is the opening of your vagina
