The gynecologic robotic surgery team at NWH offers procedures for a variety of conditions including uterine fibroids, heavy menstrual bleeding, adenomyosis, pelvic pain and gynecologic cancers.
The robotic system allows for complex surgeries to be done with tiny incision, including large fibroid removal and hysterectomy. Recovery from minimally-invasive surgery is known to afford patients a faster recovery, less postoperative pain, reduced risk of bleeding and a quicker return to normal life. Compared to traditional laparoscopy, the robotic platform facilitates multidisciplinary surgery (involving 2 or more specialties) and has been shown to be beneficial for women with elevated Body Mass Index (BMI), especially in the Gyn Oncology literature.
Endometriosis is a common gynecologic condition that can drastically impact one’s quality of life by potentially causing pain during periods, sex, bowel movements or may even impact fertility. Advanced endometriosis can not only affect the gynecologic organs (uterus, tubes, ovaries) but may be present on the bowel, ureter, bladder or lungs. As such, multidisciplinary care is paramount for some with the disease.
We have assembled a team of gynecologic, urologic, colorectal and thoracic surgeons to tackle endometriosis. We have multidisciplinary conferences to ensure each patient gets an individualized approach to their care. If needed, surgeries are performed together with 2 or more specialties all utilizing the robotic platform. After surgery, long-term care is also provided through the Endometriosis & Adenomyosis Care Collaborative.
Some patients with endometriosis can develop chronic pelvic pain. At Newton Wellesley Hospital, we also offer multi-modal care for pelvic pain and associated conditions through our Pelvic Pain Collaborative.
