Complete care for these gynecologic conditions

If you have endometriosis or adenomyosis, you are not alone. The experienced, caring providers at Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Endometriosis and Adenomyosis Care Collaborative are here to help.

We offer a full range of services to diagnose and treat endometriosis and adenomyosis, along with the painful periods and other symptoms that can accompany these conditions.

What’s the Difference Between Endometriosis and Adenomyosis?

Endometriosis and adenomyosis both involve endometrial tissue, which builds up inside the uterus to prepare for a potential pregnancy and is shed each month during a normal menstrual cycle. However, endometriosis involves the growth of tissue that looks and acts like endometrial tissue outside the uterus, usually on other reproductive organs, while adenomyosis involves the growth of endometrial tissue into the outer walls of the uterus, which causes them to thicken.

You might not notice any outward signs with either one of these conditions, or you might experience a number of symptoms. Symptoms of endometriosis can include:

  • Abnormal or heavy menstrual flow
  • Pain, especially excessive menstrual cramps
  • Pain during sex

Adenomyosis can cause similar symptoms, including:

  • Heavy or prolonged monthly bleeding
  • Pain during sex
  • Painful menstrual periods

Learn more about adenomyosis.

We also have teams in pain management, behavioral medicine, nursing, and physical therapy who can treat symptoms relating to your endometriosis. Learn more about how we ease endometriosis pain.
