At Newton-Wellesley Hospital, critically ill patients with medical, cardiologic, or surgical maladies are cared for in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This unit consists of 12 beds and includes a team of intensivists, cardiologists, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, and clinical nutritionists. The ICU functions as a "closed unit"-- the Covering Intensivist, rather than the patient's primary care physician, is the attending physician.
Our intensivists cover 12 hours shifts and are supported by a team of residents from Massachusetts General Hospital and other Boston area teaching institutions. As a teaching hospital, we have a team that includes students and residents who work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. ICU Phone: 617-243-6587
We have visitation guidelines in place to ensure your loved one receives the best care. Please call from the designated phone located on the left side of the door before entering. This connects directly to our Unit Coordinator at our nurse’s station.
The number of visitors allowed will depend on the patient's condition, and we strongly recommend that children under 15 and anyone with signs of illness refrain from visiting.
To maintain privacy for our patients, we may ask you to step out into the waiting room for a short period of time during your visit. We may do this to perform bedside procedures or to provide personal care.
Due to federal privacy laws, please remain in the patient’s room when discussing their care. Do not stand outside the room or in the hallway to take phone calls or talk about your loved one’s care.
