Having Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital

2000 Washington St, Newton MA

Weeks Before Surgery

Step 1: Registration Call

A phone call about two weeks before your scheduled surgery to confirm your personal details and insurance. The registration phone number is 617.243.6122.

Step 2: Pre-Operative Testing

An appointment by phone or in-person in advance of surgery to make sure you are medically set to safely have surgery and receive anesthesia.

Week of Surgery

Step 3: Making a Plan

The week before surgery is a good time to finalize your day of surgery plan. Use our checklist to keep track of things to do like fill prescriptions, buy groceries, and coordinate transportation home from the hospital.

Step 4: Preparing Yourself And Your Recovery Space

You may have received specific guidelines from the hospital and your surgeon that you’ll need to follow in order to make sure your care team can operate safely, including dietary restrictions and instructions.

Step 5: Getting COVID-19 Tested

You will need to get tested for COVID-19 2-3 days before your surgery. A nurse will call you to schedule your appointment and will give you necessary information. Newton-Wellesley has a designated COVID-19 testing area.  If you are symptomatic during screening or test positive for COVID-19, your procedure may be rescheduled.

Day of Surgery

Step 6: Getting To Your Surgery

We admit it’s not always easy to find your way to or around our hospital, especially if you’ve never been here before. But here’s are a few tips and pictures to make it easier:

  • Enter the hospital driveway through the East Entrance and follow signs up the hill towards the Surgical Welcome Center (address for GPS: 2000 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02462)
  • At the East Entrance, you’ll see we have valet available for the same price as garage parking. Valet is open starting at 7:30 AM. We highly recommend using our valet! If you prefer parking yourself, they can point you towards the Garage entrance.

If you're having surgery at our Outpatient Surgical Center (OSC) located at 25 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA, 02481 parking can be found right behind the building for your convenience.

Step 7: Checking In

As you walk through the East Entrance you’ll see our registration team straight ahead. Look for EAST LOBBY printed above the desk. They’ll get you checked in by confirming a few details like your name and date of birth.

Symptom Screening: Upon arrival, you will be asked several questions about any COVID-19 symptoms you may be experiencing.

Mask Policy: Please wear a mask on the way from your car into our facility. You will be issued a disposable mask upon entry, which must be worn at all times, including on your way back to your car. If you do not want to remove the mask you arrived with, you will need to wear our mask over it.

Staff Interaction: Doctors and staff will wear PPE appropriate for your procedure – including masks, gloves and face shields – throughout the entirety of your visit.

Waiting Room: Waiting areas have been rearranged to ensure proper social distancing.

Step 8: Getting Ready for Surgery

We’ll help you get settled, changed, and review the plan for the day. You’ll also spend some time with each member of your care team including your nurse, anesthesia team, and your surgeon. They will meet with you, answer your questions, and make sure you’re ready for surgery. Your anesthesia team will administer medication.

Step 9: Heading to the Operating Room (OR)

Just before heading into surgery, your surgical team will confirm the details and accompany you to the OR.

Step 10: Your Surgery

With the help of anesthesia, your surgery will be over before you know it. Your family will be updated on the progress of your surgery via text message.

Step 11: Waking Up

The next thing you’ll probably remember is waking up in the Recovery Room (also known as the PACU, or Post Anesthesia Care Unit). While your surgeon and anesthesiologist will help you settle in after surgery, you may not remember them being there. Your surgeon will reach out to your family/caretakers to let them know you’re awake and recovering. Your post-operative nurse will be there throughout, helping you transition from surgery. The last step before going home is a short stay at the Day Surgery area.

Step 12: Getting Ready To Go Home

As you start to feel like yourself again, your family/caretakers will be updated on when you may get discharged.  Your nurse will help you go over all instructions for recovery.

Step 13: Departure

To help make it easy, we’ll coordinate with the valet or a family member/caretaker to ensure that your ride is ready to go when you are. A member of our team will escort you back down to our lobby and we will follow up with you the next day to check-in on your healing.
