Gestational Diabetes Clinic

The Gestational Diabetes Clinic, led by expert and compassionate providers, meets Mondays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our goal is for women with gestational diabetes — diabetes that arises during pregnancy — to meet with all their providers in one location over a period of at least a few weeks to receive comprehensive care.

Your First Two Visits

During your first visit, you will meet with a diabetes nurse educator and/or registered dietitian to go over your health history. Then, on your second visit, you will meet with an endocrinologist, who will review your blood sugar levels to determine if you should take insulin medication. If insulin is recommended, our diabetes nurse educator will provide you with instructions on how to take it. A registered dietitian or nutritionist, meanwhile, will evaluate your diet.

Additional Visits

On your third visit and beyond, you will meet with a diabetes nurse educator, endocrinologist, and registered dietitian/nutritionist as needed. Additionally, you will have ultrasound and non-stress tests scheduled through the Maternal Fetal Medicine Department

If you are on insulin, you will have non-stress tests and prenatal ultrasound evaluations every week beginning at 32 weeks to ensure your pregnancy is going well. At 36 weeks, we’ll test twice a week. If you are not on insulin, we’ll perform a growth scan at 37 weeks to determine the size of your baby.

Since gestational diabetes typically ends after delivery, a two-hour, 75-gram postpartum glucose tolerance test is scheduled for eight weeks after delivery to ensure your diabetes is gone.
