The Atrial Fibrillation Program at Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Elfers Cardiovascular Center provides highly personalized care for patients with AFib. We work closely with you, your referring clinician and a team of atrial fibrillation specialists at the Cardiovascular Center to develop a treatment plan that lowers your stroke risk and reduces or eliminates your atrial fibrillation symptoms.
The Elfers Cardiovascular Center is a multidisciplinary center providing the highest quality cardiology care in collaboration with specialists from Massachusetts General Hospital. The Center is dedicated to the primary prevention, early diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease.
Our patients have access to expert medical teams, including cardiologists, vascular surgeons, electrophysiologists and interventional radiologists from both Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Your AFib care team will typically include a Massachusetts General Hospital electrophysiologist (a cardiologist who specializes in heart rhythm conditions), a Newton-Wellesley cardiologist, a cardiovascular nurse practitioner and a clinical pharmacist.
Our multidisciplinary team approach allows us to:
Your first visit includes a meeting with one of our cardiologists along with a cardiovascular nurse practitioner and clinical pharmacist. The cardiologist will review your medical history and prior testing and conduct a thorough physical exam. An electrophysiologist is available during each session for any additional consultation needs.
If more diagnostic information is needed, additional testing, such as advanced cardiac imaging, may be advised. Our team includes non-invasive cardiologists and radiologists who specialize in employing a variety of imaging techniques to evaluate your heart in detail.
Patient education is a cornerstone of our care model. During each visit, we will partner with you to ensure that you understand your condition and treatment options. Our clinical pharmacist is available to teach you how to safely take all your medications and answer any questions you may have about drug interactions and cost.
Working with specialists from Massachusetts General Hospital ensures that our patients have access to the most advanced treatments at both locations.
Mark used to work 70 hours a week. So, when he experienced a cardiac episode, he wanted a doctor who was just as devoted to his job as he was. “I depend on Dr. Philippides to care for my heart. He knows my heart better than I do. He was the glue getting me through each experience. Dr. Philippides has been extremely responsive and constantly shows that he really cares about me as a person.”
