Welcome to the Auerbach Breast Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where your care is our mission. We serve patients in the Greater Boston area who have breast-related problems, including a new breast lump, pain, nipple discharge, or an abnormal mammogram.
We are dedicated to treating every patient as a beloved family member. We know that every woman is concerned about breast health, and we are committed to offering you advances in early detection and treatment that have resulted in higher breast cancer cure rates than ever before.
Our goal at the Auerbach Breast Center is to provide you with the highest level of care for breast health in a comfortable community setting.
You can expect exceptional care at the Auerbach Breast Center from our trained specialists, whether for routine mammograms or more advanced care for breast conditions such as breast cancer.
We provide thorough consultations for women who may be at higher risk for developing breast cancer due to family history or other risk factors. We also provide access to genetic testing and counseling on strategies to lower your risk for breast cancer.
If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, we provide a multidisciplinary approach to care. Our highly trained specialists collaborate to create a patient-centered plan based on the latest treatment advances in breast cancer. Our team works in conjunction with multiple departments at Newton-Wellesley Hospital to provide comprehensive, patient-focused screenings for breast cancer and breast disorders. For breast cancer screenings, the Women’s Imaging Center offers mammograms and breast MRIs at three convenient locations. When screenings reveal breast abnormalities, breast diagnostics are performed here at the Auerbach Breast Center.
We also provide exceptional support services and carefully guide you to the right ones at the right time for your needs. Our nurse navigator provides support from the point of diagnosis through the entire continuum of care, coordinating appointments with multiple providers.
At Newton-Wellesley Hospital, we are committed to innovation. We offer you access to various breast cancer clinical trials with Mass General Cancer Center, and we were among the first centers in the country to begin offering tomosynthesis, which is 3D breast imaging for early detection. Newton-Wellesley Hospital is at the forefront of advances in reconstructive surgery, offering options customized to each person’s needs
In addition, we are proud that NWH is the first center in Massachusetts to offer a new scalp cooling system in our infusion center to help avoid hair loss that occurs with certain chemotherapy treatments. Scalp Cooling is a simple treatment that can prevent hair loss caused by some chemotherapy, lowering the temperature of the scalp immediately before, during and after chemotherapy. Scalp cooling reduces the blood flow to the area around the hair follicles, while remaining comfortable and tolerable for the patient. NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology now recommend scalp cooling as a category 2A treatment option for patients with invasive breast cancer. According to a 2015 Journal of the American College of Surgeons study, most women with early-stage breast cancer are now avoiding extensive lymph node removal. It also points out that more surgeons are following scientic evidence that says radical operations may no longer be necessary for these patients.
Over the last decade, breast reconstruction options offered have improved dramatically in the United States. Research and innovative new techniques have made breast reconstruction safer and less painful. Newton-Wellesley Hospital has been a leader in using many of these new technologies. We can now customize many of our treatments for each patient.
A diagnosis of breast cancer can be an overwhelming experience. At the Auerbach Breast Center, we offer compassionate, patient-centered breast cancer treatment.
Patients come to us from throughout Greater Boston thanks in part to the reputation of our breast cancer specialists and surgeons. Every new patient meets with members of our multi-disciplinary team - breast cancer surgeons, breast oncologists, breast radiation oncologists and nurses - to discuss treatment options. We create an individualized breast cancer treatment program for each patient. When possible, we book appointments with the multi-disciplinary team members on the same day. The team works together to design the best treatment plan for the patient.
