About Your Sleep Study
A laboratory sleep study is considered the "gold standard" to accurately diagnose sleep disorders. In order to understand your sleep, it is necessary to observe various brain activities and body systems and their relationships while you sleep. Serving Greater Boston communities, the Sleep Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital coordinates sleep studies to diagnose and offer treatment options for a range of sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep apnea and narcolepsy.
After the study, a sleep specialist will interpret the observations to help you and your physician understand your specific sleep patterns and problems. Treatment recommendations will be made if there is evidence of a sleep disorder.
If the sleep test reveals sleep apnea, it is common to perform a second test to determine the best treatment. Usually, the least invasive and most successful form of treatment for sleep apnea is a CPAP machine. This involves breathing through a mask that is connected to a small, quiet air-pumping machine. The second test is needed to adjust the CPAP to a comfortable setting and correct the sleep apnea.

Sleep Study Test Location
The Sleep Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital conducts sleep studies at the Boston Marriott Newton. This setting provides patients with the best environment to evaluate their sleep conditions. During the sleep testing, a technologist monitors the patient while a computerized sleep system records various brain activity and physiological functions.
The technologist will monitor your sleep throughout the night from a nearby room, which provides a home-like environment with minimal anxiety. Sleep testing at the Marriott offers patients the most comfortable surroundings for sleeping outside of their own bedroom.
The testing location occupies a first floor wing of the hotel. Each room has an individual patio opening to a relaxing view of the river. The environment is quiet and comfortable with the best accommodations including a top-quality mattress and linens. When patients are able to get a good night of sleep, the technologists are able to collect the necessary data to assist the sleep specialist in diagnosing sleep conditions.
