Child Life Specialists
When a family experiences a traumatic event, life-threatening illness or a death of a loved one, a child life specialist (CLS) can help ease the stress by promoting emotional support for the child and family.
Child life specialists play a vital role in educating others about the needs of children under stress. We collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team and with parents to help children to ease their fears and anxiety related to hospitalization. A CLS is a skilled professional who has earned at least a bachelor’s degree in education, child development, psychology or a related field. All our child life specialists are professionally certified through the Child Life Council.
The American Academy of Pediatrics affirms that child life is "an essential component of quality pediatric health care." Newton- Wellesley Hospital prides itself in family-centered care and has grown the child life program to meet the needs of the community it serves.
We are primarily located on the Pediatric Inpatient Unit, Emergency Department and in the Pediatric Gastroenterology/Perioperative Services areas but are available for consults to all areas of the Hospital. We also participate with planning and implementing community events involving children.
