Advancing Student Health Services at Wellesley College
Wellesley College and Newton-Wellesley Collegiate Health establish innovative collaboration to provide high-quality on-campus medical care to students
Newton, Mass. (January 6, 2020) — Wellesley College is now offering an innovative approach to providing health care services to its more than 2,400 students. Through a collaboration between Wellesley College and Newton-Wellesley Collegiate Health, a service of Newton-Wellesley Hospital, hospital providers are based at Wellesley’s campus, providing students with convenient access to top-quality health care. This is a novel approach in Massachusetts for addressing the health needs of students.
Highly-specialized care is also available through Newton-Wellesley Hospital and the broader Partners HealthCare network including Mass General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Newton-Wellesley Collegiate Health is also the official sports medicine provider for varsity student-athletes.
“This collaboration marks an even stronger era of health care at Wellesley,” said Wellesley College President Paula A. Johnson, MD. “Newton-Wellesley—with its outstanding medical team, its network of specialized providers, and operational expertise—will ensure our students receive the world-class health care for which the Boston area is renowned.”
The new service builds on an existing relationship between Wellesley College and Newton-Wellesley Hospital, which has been providing emergency care and outpatient services to Wellesley students for several years.
“We have long enjoyed our close partnership with Wellesley College,” said Jodi Larson, MD, Chief Quality and Experience and Senior Vice President at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “This deeper partnership between these two very strong local institutions represents a new approach to providing better on-campus health care.”
The Newton-Wellesley Collegiate Health team will be led by Jennifer Schwartz, MD, who brings deep expertise in family medicine, eating disorder management and sports medicine to Wellesley. Dr. Schwartz received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Medical School, completed her residency and internship in family medicine at Tufts University and completed a sports medicine fellowship at UMass. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the health and wellbeing of Wellesley College students,” said Dr. Schwartz. “I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know such a diverse group of students and I look forward to ensuring they have access to the best health care possible.”
