JAMES L. KAPLAN, PhD, ELECTED CHAIR,

NEWTON-WELLESLEY HOSPITAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES

NEWTON, Mass. (August, 2018) – Newton-Wellesley Hospital is pleased to announce that Weston resident James L. Kaplan, PhD, has been elected Chair of the Hospital’s Board of Trustees. In this role, Dr. Kaplan will serve as the 40th Board Chair in the history of the hospital. He succeeds Earl “Duke” Collier, who has chaired the Board since 2013.

Dr. Kaplan brings a wealth of experience and insight gained from his distinguished career. In 1976, he founded J.L. Kaplan Associates and in 2002 sold the firm to Evergreen Investments, the asset management division of Wachovia Corp. He then established Cubic Asset Management in 2007, where he continues to serve as a portfolio manager. From 1970-1972, Dr. Kaplan was an assistant professor of mathematics at Northwestern University, and taught as a tenured associate professor of mathematics at Boston University from 1972-1984. Dr. Kaplan earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland.

“I am passionate about the increasingly vital role community-based health care plays in our society, and there is no better example than Newton-Wellesley Hospital,” said Dr. Kaplan. “Newton-Wellesley has not only continued to excel across all quality and experience indicators but is consistently innovating care delivery to best support patients and families. I am deeply honored to serve as Chair of this world-class community hospital,” said Dr. Kaplan.

Appointed to Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Board of Trustees in 2007, Dr. Kaplan most recently served as a Vice Chair, member of the Nominating and Governance Committee and Trustee Development Committee. He was also a Director of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Charitable Foundation and a member of the Board of Advisors.

In addition to his ardent leadership support of Newton-Wellesley, Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Ellen, have been generous benefactors. In 2005, the Kaplans funded the Spine Center’s Picture Archive Communication System (PACS), which enabled the Center to be entirely filmless, allowing physicians to review test results more quickly. In late 2006, the Kaplans made a gift that established the renowned Kaplan Joint Center, which ensures that Newton-Wellesley’s community has access to innovative orthopedic techniques performed by top surgeons with specialized skills.

Dr. Kaplan’s interests go beyond health care and philanthropy. In his spare time he makes wine, establishing Aftermath Wines in Napa, CA. Natives of Brooklyn, he and his wife Ellen currently reside in Weston and have one son and three grandchildren.

“I am deeply grateful for Jim’s steadfast support of Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and he has already made a lasting impression on our organization,” said Dr. Michael R. Jaff, President, Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “I look forward to continuing our work together as Newton-Wellesley leads the way in redefining health care delivery with an unwavering focus on exceeding patient expectations.”
