What to Expect When Your College Kid Comes Home

Home for the Holidays

Dr. Elizabeth Booma, Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, provides parents with advice on what to expect when your kid comes home for college during the holiday break.  Here are some behaviors to expect, and tips on how to respond:

If your child is dealing with more severe emotional problems like anxiety, depression, or substance use, it may be time to seek the help of a professional your child’s pediatrician is a good place to start.  It may also make sense to contact their school and let them know that you think something is going on with your child.  They can at least be aware when they come back and can reach out to your child.
