Newton-Wellesley Hospital partnered with Waltham Public Schools to welcome dozens of students at a Community Health Day last month. The event was held on March 26th at the hospital’s Waltham Walk-In location.
The Community Health Day served many students who are recent immigrants and had not previously had access to annual physicals – a critical part of staying healthy, both physically and mentally.
NWH and Newton-Wellesley Medical Group convened a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, including physicians, nurses, and medical assistants, as well as support staff from several departments across the organization. This team worked collaboratively to design and implement a comprehensive program to support these students and their families, including advance outreach to families conducted in Spanish to schedule appointments and provide reminders and lists of required documentation.
This Community Health Day provided 38 students with easy access to important medical care, video interpretation services, and connections to community partners to help educate and provide additional resources in areas such as housing, nutrition access and mental health services. NWH clinical colleagues made several referrals for ENT, neurology, dental and other specialty services, and connected families with primary care providers for ongoing care.
The hospital’s Patient Financial Counselors also helped seven families enroll in MassHealth and assisted another four families with MassHealth-related questions. Those who attended were also given COVID-19 test kits, masks, and $25 grocery gift cards to take home with them, among other items.
