Newton-Wellesley Hospital earns ‘climate leader’ award for energy conservation measures

Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) is proud to announce that it has been selected as a 2022 Mass Save™ Climate Leader by the Sponsors of Mass Save. NWH is one of 19 organizations chosen to receive this distinct designation for noteworthy efforts in increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

NWH received this recognition as a result of its energy efficiency work over the last several years. Recent significant accomplishments include a 1.9 million kWh project, the implementation of steam trap repair and replacement, and pipe insulation projects. Taken together, the Sponsors of Mass Save estimate that NWH’s work has saved nearly 24 million kWh of electricity and 1.7 million kWh in gas – the equivalent of carbon sequestered by 20,000 acres of U.S. forests in a single year.

NWH received this recognition along with Salem Hospital, another member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system. Mass General Brigham has had an enduring commitment to lessening its impact on the environment, with numerous systemwide initiatives aimed at minimizing greenhouse gas emissions from operations, reducing medical waste, increasing recycling and purchasing environmentally friendly products. Earlier this year, Mass General Brigham also announced its support for the Biden administration's pledge to decarbonize the healthcare sector and committed to slashing emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
