NEWTON, Mass. (August 15, 2019) – Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) is proud to announce that Lawrence S. Friedman, MD, Chair, Department of Medicine, has received the Albert Nelson Marquis Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Friedman was honored for his outstanding achievements, leadership qualities, and numerous credentials and successes over the past 40 years in the medical field.
For the last 16 years, Dr. Friedman has been Chair of the Department of Medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Assistant Chief of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 2013, he was named the Anton R. Fried, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine at Newton-Wellesley, where he also has a consultative practice focused on liver disease. At NWH, Dr. Friedman has helped to transform the Department of Medicine, which provides a full spectrum of outstanding primary and subspecialty care to the surrounding communities.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Friedman attended Princeton University and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine combined BA/MD program. He completed his residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in gastroenterology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. From 1984 to 1993, he was on the faculty of Jefferson Medical College, where he served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine. From 1993 to 2003, he was a member of the Gastrointestinal Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also served as Chief of the Walter Bauer Firm in the Department of Medicine. He is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Friedman is an established authority in his field, authoring over 400 papers and chapters on all aspects of gastroenterology. He is co-editor of Sleisenger and Fordtran’s Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, Handbook of Liver Disease, and Essentials of Gastroenterology; and is editor of the general gastroenterology section for UpToDate. He is past Chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Exam-Writing Committee for Gastroenterology, the Multi-Society Task Force on GI Training, and Digestive Disease Week Council. He has also been a member of the ABIM Gastroenterology Board and a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Antimicrobial Drugs Advisory Committee.
He has received numerous awards over the years, including The Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching (at Jefferson Medical College); The Alfred Kranes Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching (at Massachusetts General Hospital); The Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy; and the Distinguished Educator Award from the American Gastroenterological Association.
