NEWTON-WELLESLEY HOSPITAL LAUNCHES COLLABORATIVE FOR HEALTHY FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES
NEWTON, Mass. (February, 2018) – Newton-Wellesley Hospital is proud to announce a new initiative: The Newton-Wellesley Collaborative for Healthy Families and Communities (CHF&C). This collaborative was formed to enhance the services and resources that address unmet patient and community wellness needs.
“Building upon our long-standing commitment to providing important community programs to area residents, the CHF&C will further expand our efforts to weave the hospital into the social fabric of our communities,” said Dr. Michael R. Jaff, President, Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “There is clear evidence that social determinants are a major contributor to poor health outcomes and impact the well-being of our patients and families. We need to provide even more support to our communities through a range of educational and preventive interventions to ensure that we address our community’s needs throughout the lifespan of families.”
The Collaborative encompasses Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s community benefit initiatives, which are an integral part of its mission. The Hospital has a long history of creating partnerships between our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program and area high schools; providing free flu vaccination clinics; supporting home-based programs to prevent seniors from falling; providing donations of Naloxone (Narcan) to first responders for emergency treatment of overdoses; providing lunches for school children in Waltham during summer break; and funding a strong domestic violence support effort.
Another feature of the CHF&C is a Speakers Bureau, providing medical experts free of charge to address community groups, schools and other civic organizations. This free service is designed to provide up-to-date information on a wide variety of health and wellness issues. Topics may include: adolescent and adult mental health, elder services, concussion treatment, parental role in high school sports, nutrition, medication safety, palliative care and substance abuse.
The Newton-Wellesley CHF&C is planning to launch new programs to address several community needs, starting with the unmet needs of mothers before and after delivery, with a specific emphasis on post-partum depression. Additional areas of focus include palliative care and community education, among other issues.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital provides a wide range of services, including medical, surgical, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiovascular, emergency, orthopedic, neonatal, pediatric, hematology/oncology, and psychiatric care. Newton-Wellesley has been serving its community for over a century. The medical staff of the Hospital includes nearly 1,000 physicians practicing a full range of specialties. NWH is a major teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine and has established post-graduate training programs for Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital residents, teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School.
