NEWTON, Mass. (December, 2016) -- Giulia L. Sheftel, MD, Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory at the Elfers Cardiovascular Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, has been designated a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE).
The Fellow designation recognizes those members who have fulfilled both the training and performance requirements that are necessary for certification through the National Board of Echocardiography or other approved certified organization(s). Attainment of this important standard of practice recognizes that Dr. Sheftel is committed to continued excellence in the field of Echocardiography, as it applies to diagnosis and management of cardiovascular conditions.
Dr. Sheftel attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she graduated with special distinction for research in Behavioral Genetics. She completed her internship and residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and Cardiology Fellowship at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Boston Medical Center. Dr. Sheftel completed an additional year of training as a clinical fellow in Preventive Cardiology at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center/Harvard Medical School.
She has coauthored several publications and has served as co principal investigator on several research studies. Her special interests include preventive cardiology, heart disease in women, and cardiovascular imaging. She is currently Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and Clinical Professor at the School of Physician Assistant Studies, MCPHS. In addition to a full-time clinical practice, Dr. Sheftel currently serves as Medical Director of the Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
Dr. Sheftel resides in Wayland with her family.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital recently opened its Elfers Cardiovascular Center, a multidisciplinary center that provides the highest quality care in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiology and Vascular Surgery Divisions. The Center, centrally located in more than 20,000 square feet of space on the second floor of the hospital, is dedicated to the early diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease. Patients have access to expert medical teams, including cardiologists, vascular surgeons, electrophysiologists and interventional radiologists from both Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Mass General–all in one convenient location, close to home.
