American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Recognizes Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Newton-Wellesley has received four awards this year from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA). This outstanding recognition for treatment provided to heart failure and stroke patients is being published in the 2014 edition of US News and World Report. We earned the second greatest number of awards of any hospital in Massachusetts. The quality measurements for these awards center around reliability in providing treatments, especially pharmaceutical management that favorably impact patient outcomes.  The Hospital's achievement levels include:

About 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. The Boston Business Journal has named Newton-Wellesley Hospital as one of the Best Places to Work in Massachusetts! We are pleased to announce that we were recognized as the 20th top company in the large size employer category. This honor recognizes our achievements in creating a positive work environment that attracts and retains employees through a combination of employee satisfaction, working conditions and company culture. This is the fifth time in the past seven years that Newton-Wellesley has achieved this distinction. Newton-Wellesley was one of over 400 companies to qualify for consideration based on a two-stage nomination process and the results of employee satisfaction surveys taken during the spring.

Newton-Wellesley's Reproductive Medicine Center has been recognized as a Nursing Center of Excellence by the Executive Board of the Nurses Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Newton-Wellesley Receives Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer
The Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is one of 79 cancer care facilities nationwide that recently received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons.

Award criteria were based on qualitative and quantitative surveys conducted last year. The purpose of the award is to raise the bar on quality cancer care, with the ultimate goal of increasing awareness about quality care choices among cancer patients and their loved ones. Established in 2004, the CoC’s Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. Learn More

Newton-Wellesley Hospital has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the AAGL (American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists) and Surgical Review Corporation. This program recognizes surgeons and facilities that demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care. The program is structured to help minimally invasive gynecologic surgery providers continuously improve care quality and patient safety.

Blue Cross Blue Shield designates Newton-Wellesley Hospital a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery
Newton-Wellesley has been designated a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Newton-Wellesley was evaluated by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts on the ability to deliver high-quality and safe care for patients undergoing knee and hip replacement and spine surgery. Additionally, Newton-Wellesley has met efficiency measures that address patients’ needs for affordable health care – designating us as a Center+.

This designation, based on objective, evidence-based selection criteria, indicates to patients and our referring physicians that Newton-Wellesley provides safe, high-quality care when delivering knee/hip replacement and spine surgery. The Blue Distinction Centers initiative has more than 15 years of experience in working with expert physicians and medical organizations to help consumers find quality specialty care while encouraging health care professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of care.

AHA/ASA Award Recognizes Newton-Wellesley’s Success in Caring for Stroke Patients 
Newton-Wellesley Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes our commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines.

To receive the award, Newton-Wellesley achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines- Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.


NEHOA Receives Recognition for Cancer Care
Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s medical oncology partner, New England Hematology/Oncology Associates (NEHOA)has received reaccreditation by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The QOPI® Certification Program provides a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet the highest standards for quality cancer care. Learn more


2012 Harvard Pilgrim Hospital Honor Roll
. The Honor Roll names those hospitals whose performance was among the top 25 percent of those measured nationally on a set of composite quality metrics. The metrics are based on the CMS Hospital Compare and Leapfrog measures. The Newton-Wellesley Physician Hospital Organization was also named to the Harvard Pilgrim Physician Group Honor Roll in recognition of excellence in preventative, acute and chronic care illness management for our Harvard Pilgrim Heath Care patients. Learn More

Newton-Wellesley Hospital received the distinction of Accreditation with Commendation for a three year period from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.This is the highest recognition awarded. A facility receives a Three-Year Approval with Commendation following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement. Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Award.Through our partnership with MassRides, Newton Wellesley has been name a Pacesetter award recipient at the Third Annual Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Awards! The ECO Awards celebrate Massachusetts employers and their efforts to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging employees to utilize green transportation options. Newton-Wellesley has made a difference by encouraging employees to travel to work by public transit, bicycling, walking or through the promotion of carpools and vanpools. Learn More

The Vernon Cancer Center is one of 79 cancer care facilities nationwide that received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. Award criteria were based on qualitative and quantitative surveys conducted last year. The CoC’s Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. The award-winning, cancer-care programs represent approximately 19 percent of programs surveyed by the CoC in 2012. Learn More

Newton-Wellesley Hospital tops the state for employee influenza immunization rates. The Hospital notched the highest vaccination rate, with 101.8 percent. State regulators said fluctuations in staff throughout the year can slightly increase or decrease the apparent percentages of employees vaccinated, resulting in the rate higher than 100 percent. Newton-Wellesley Hospital received high marks from The Leapfrog Hospital Recognition Program™ (LHRP), achieving the highest quality score in the State of Massachusetts and ranking in the top 10% of hospitals nationally with regard to “value”, as measured by both quality and efficiency scores. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has enlisted 139 hospitals from across the country to participate in Aligning Forces for Quality Hospital Quality Network. Newton-Wellesley is among the participating hospitals.
