Hospital Named to Harvard Pilgrim Hospital 2015 Health Care Honor Roll
Newton-Wellesley Hospital has once again been named to the Harvard Pilgrim Hospital Health Care Honor Roll. The Hospital Honor Roll names those hospitals whose performance was among the top 25 percent of those measured nationally on a set of composite quality metrics such as clinical process of care, patient experience and patient safety.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital Voted One of the 2016 Best In the Region
Readers of the Hometown Weekly Newspaper voted Newton-Wellesley Hospital as #2 in the region. The Hometown Weekly is delivered to homes in the towns of Dover, Medfield, Needham, Sherborn, Walpole and Westwood.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital Receives 2015 National Outstanding Achievement Award from American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer
Newton-Wellesley Hospital was recently presented with the 2015 Outstanding AchievementAward by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Newton-Wellesley Hospital is one of a select group of only 20 U.S. health care facilities with accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor for surveys performed January 1 – June 30, 2015.
The award acknowledges cancer programs that achieve excellence in
providing quality care to cancer patients.
Hospital Receives Family Favorite 2016 Award from Boston Parents Paper
The Boston Parents Paper named Newton-Wellesley Hospital as a Top 5 Family Favorite Hospital it its annual Best of the Best magazine. Readers submitted their choices for favorite area hospitals offering excellent patient care and quality birthing centers.
Hospital Awarded #1 in the Region for 2016
Newton-Wellesley Hospital honored with 2016 gold from Wicked Local Readers Choice Award. It was also recognized for the same award in 2014 and 2013.
Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Certified by Industry Leader
Newton-Wellesley’s Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program was certified in 2016 by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Our program was recognized for its commitment to improving the quality of life by enhancing standards of care. Learn More>
Newton-Wellesley Recognized by US News & World Report for Heart Failure and Stroke
Newton-Wellesley has been recognized in 2016 by the US News & World Report for outstanding care of our heart failure and stroke patients. The Hospital received the following awards from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association:
- Gold Plus Achievement – Heart Failure
These hospitals are recognized for two or more consecutive years of 85 percent or higher adherence on all achievement measures applicable and 75 percent or higher adherence with four or more select quality measures in heart failure.
- Honor Roll
These hospitals are recognized for at least one calendar quarter of 50 percent or higher adherence to all relevant Target: Heart Failure measures in addition to current Bronze, Silver or Gold Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure recognition status.
- Gold Plus Achievement – Stroke
These hospitals are recognized for two or more consecutive years of 85 percent or higher adherence on all achievement measures applicable and at least 75 percent or higher adherence with five or more select quality measures in stroke (S). Honor Roll Elite Plus These hospitals are recognized for at least four consecutive quarters of 75 percent or higher achievement of door-to-needle times within 60 minutes AND 50 percent achievement of door-toneedle times within 45 minutes in applicable stroke patients in addition to current Silver or Gold Get With The Guidelines-Stroke recognition status. measures in stroke (S).

U.S. News & World Report Names NWH Among Top Hospitals in Boston
In the August 2015 issue of U.S. News & World Report, Newton-Wellesley Hospital has been named among the top 10 hospitals in Boston and among the top 11 in Massachusetts. In addition to the regional honors, Newton-Wellesley received accolades from U.S. News as a high-performing hospital in hip and knee replacement. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals national rankings recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. U.S. News also evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties and recognizes regional high-performing hospitals that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers. According to U.S. News, only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. The Hospital has also been rated high performing in the areas of geriatrics, orthopaedics and urology, as well as hip and knee replacement procedures in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Common Care ratings. The ratings evaluate more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide on common inpatient procedures and conditions.
Human Rights Campaign Honors Newton-Wellesley
Newton-Wellesley Hospital named to the 2016 list of “Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign. The list includes organizations who strive to provide equitable, knowledgeable, sensitive and welcoming healthcare, free from discrimination based on LGBT status. The Hospital has also been named to the list in 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.
Boston Magazine Names 30+ NWH Physicians to 2015 Top Doctors List
Boston Magazine featured more than 30 Newton-Wellesley Hospital physicians as top doctors in the state.
Hospital Honored for Stroke Care
Newton-Wellesley received the Paul Coverdell Award for engagement in the leading national quality improvement initiative for stroke care, the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry Hospital Collaborative. This award reflects that 91 percent of the Hospital's patients received defect-free care, a number that exceeds the target level necessary to receive the award. This also demonstrates the Hospital's commitment to apply evidence-based principles to the care of stroke patients in a timely, reliable and consistent fashion – principles which make a difference in patient outcomes.
The Hospital also received the Defect-free Care Award from the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). Defect-free care is achieved when a patient receives the appropriate care based on clinical guidelines. The Coverdell Defect-free Care Award recognizes hospitals that, from the period of January to December 2015, provided defect-free care to 90 percent or more of their stroke patients by utilizing all of the interventions for which each patient was eligible. The number of Coverdell hospitals providing defect-free care to the majority of their patients has increased significantly over the last six years, resulting in many more patients receiving high-quality care.
NWH Earns “Straight As” for Patient Safety from Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score
Newton-Wellesley has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety by being awarded an A grade in the Spring 2015 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital. The Hospital is also being recognized as a “Straight As” hospital, as it has never received a grade lower than an A from the Hospital Safety Score since the Score first launched in June 2012.
Outpatient Surgery Center Receives Guardian of Excellence Award
Newton-Wellesley’s Outpatient Surgery Center is proud to announce it has been named a 2014 Guardian of Excellence Award winner by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. The Guardian of Excellence Award recognizes top-performing facilities that consistently achieved the 95th percentile of performance in Patient Experience. The Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award is a nationally-recognized symbol of achievement in health care. Presented annually, the award honors institutions who consistently sustained performance in the top five percent of all Press Ganey clients for each reporting period during the course of one year.

Newton-Wellesley has been ranked as one of the best hospitals in Greater Boston and Massachusetts by U.S. News & World Report. About 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. U.S. News also recognized Newton-Wellesley as “high performing” in the areas of geriatrics, orthopaedics and urology.
Boston Business Journal Recognizes Newton-Wellesley as a 2014 Best Place to Work!
The Boston Business Journal has named Newton-Wellesley Hospital as one of the Best Places to Work in Massachusetts! We are pleased to announce that we were recognized as the 20th top company in the large size employer category. This honor recognizes our achievements in creating a positive work environment that attracts and retains employees through a combination of employee satisfaction, working conditions and company culture. This is the fifth time in the past seven years that Newton-Wellesley has achieved this distinction. Newton-Wellesley was one of over 400 companies to qualify for consideration based on a two-stage nomination process and the results of employee satisfaction surveys taken during the spring.
Reproductive Medicine Center Named Nursing Center of Excellence
Newton-Wellesley's Reproductive Medicine Center has been recognized as a Nursing Center of Excellence by the Executive Board of the Nurses Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. We are the first in Massachusetts and only one of 14 centers in the United States to receive this designation.
Newton-Wellesley Named Practice Greenhealth Partner for Change
Newton-Wellesley was recently awarded the 2014 “Greenhealth Partner for Change” by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading health care community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care through tools, best practices and knowledge. The award is one of the organization’s Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor outstanding environmental achievements in the health care sector.
Sleep Center Accredited by AASM
The Sleep Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital recently received program accreditation for a five year period from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for exceeding all standards in core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisitions, patient care and quality assurance. Blue Cross Blue Shield designates Newton-Wellesley Hospital a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery
Newton-Wellesley has been designated a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Newton-Wellesley was evaluated by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts on the ability to deliver high-quality and safe care for patients undergoing knee and hip replacement and spine surgery. Additionally, Newton-Wellesley has met efficiency measures that address patients’ needs for affordable health care – designating us as a Center+.
This designation, based on objective, evidence-based selection criteria, indicates to patients and our referring physicians that Newton-Wellesley provides safe, high-quality care when delivering knee/hip replacement and spine surgery. The Blue Distinction Centers initiative has more than 15 years of experience in working with expert physicians and medical organizations to help consumers find quality specialty care while encouraging health care professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of care.
AHA/ASA Award Recognizes Newton-Wellesley’s Success in Caring for Stroke Patients
Newton-Wellesley Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes our commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines.
To receive the award, Newton-Wellesley achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines- Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology by the AAGL (American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists) and Surgical Review Corporation. Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Award.Through our partnership with MassRides, Newton Wellesley has been name a Pacesetter award recipient at the Third Annual Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Awards! The ECO Awards celebrate Massachusetts employers and their efforts to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging employees to utilize green transportation options. Newton-Wellesley Hospital tops the state for employee influenza immunization rates. The Hospital notched the highest vaccination rate, with 101.8 percent. State regulators said fluctuations in staff throughout the year can slightly increase or decrease the apparent percentages of employees vaccinated, resulting in the rate higher than 100 percent. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has enlisted 139 hospitals from across the country to participate in Aligning Forces for Quality Hospital Quality Network.
