Newton-Wellesley Hospital's Orthopaedic Outpatient Surgery Center
Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Orthopaedic Outpatient Surgery Center, located at 25 Washington Street in Wellesley, opened last year and has been providing patients with the highest-quality surgical care. The Center houses four operating rooms on the second floor and medical office space on the first floor in 17,000 square feet of space. The operating rooms at the Center are used for outpatient orthopaedic and hand surgical procedures and utilize state-of-the-art technology and equipment.
“Since opening the Center, we have had an overwhelmingly positive response from our patients,” says Timothy E. Foster, MD, Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “We are able to offer high-quality care in a beautiful, convenient location, which makes the day of surgery easier and more comfortable for patients and families.”
The Orthopaedic Surgery Service is one of Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s largest clinical services. Patients of all ages with disorders of the musculoskeletal system are treated by highly skilled orthopaedic surgeons.
“The hand surgery specialists affiliated at Newton-Wellesley make up one of the largest hand surgery services in New England,” says Bruce Leslie, MD, Medical Director of the Center and a hand surgeon. “They provide expert care for conditions from the elbow to the fingertips. Our surgeons frequently treat wrist and hand fractures, joint injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendon ruptures, trigger fingers, arthritis, tendonitis and congenital deformities of the hand.”
“The correction of hand and elbow conditions requires meticulous surgical technique due to the complex anatomy of the upper extremity; we have nationally acclaimed hand surgeons on our staff at Newton-Wellesley Hospital,” says Dr. Foster. “Our surgeons provide expert care in the evaluation and treatment of hand and elbow conditions, which allows our patients to regain essential hand function and return to everyday activities. All of our hand surgeons have completed a post-residency fellowship program that requires an extra one to two years of training.”
The surgeons at the Center also treat many sports injuries for a wide spectrum of patients – from the recreational athlete to the elite college and professional athlete. Some common procedures performed include:

“Our surgeons treat a full spectrum of athletic injuries,” explains Dr. Foster. “We treat patients involved in high school, college and professional athletics, but we also treat recreational athletes such as runners, golfers and tennis players. The majority of our sports medicine surgeons are fellowship trained and certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Our goal is to restore musculoskeletal function to each patient, and return them to their normal daily activities. Our ultimate goal is restore the patient to a pre-injury level of function, and eventually return the patient to full athletic participation.”
The Center offers patients access to the same arthroscopic and open surgical options as the main Hospital campus. Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to look inside a joint through a thin viewing instrument called an arthroscope. The arthroscope has a light source and a high definition video camera; the images are magnified and displayed in the operating room on a video monitor. The joint is expanded by the constant flow of saline and the magnified images provide a clear picture allowing the surgeon to work within the confined space of the joint.
“During an arthroscopic procedure, surgeons can inspect the joint surfaces and surrounding soft tissues including ligaments and cartilage structures such as the meniscus in the knee and labrum in the shoulder,” adds Alfred Hanmer, MD, Assistant Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery. “This procedure is commonly used to repair articular cartilage defects, ligament injuries and meniscal or labral tears. Arthroscopic surgery is commonly performed on the knee, shoulder, ankle, hip, elbow and wrist. This technique is minimally invasive and it avoids muscle splitting and open surgical techniques, thereby offering patients several benefits including decreased pain and potentially a faster recovery time.”
Having a dedicated Outpatient Surgery Center improves patient care and ultimately benefits the patient.

Timothy Foster, MD, Chair, Department of Orthopaedics,
Dr. Foster received his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Dartmouth- Hitchcock Medical Center and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Boston University Medical Center and Lahey Clinic. Dr. Foster completed his fellowship in sports medicine at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital and his pediatric sports fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and holds an ABOS subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He has been the Associate Editor of The American Journal of Sports Medicine for the last 15 years. Dr. Foster also has an interest in health care delivery and finance; he is expected to receive a master’s degree from Dartmouth College in the near future.
Bruce Leslie, MD, Medical Director, Outpatient Surgery Center and Hand Surgeon, Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Dr. Leslie received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate – Syracuse. He completed his residency and fellowship in hand surgery at the New England Medical Center and the New England Baptist Hospital. Dr. Leslie is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and he holds an ABOS subspecialty certification in hand surgery.
Alfred Hanmer, MD, Assistant Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Assistant Director, Kaplan Joint Center, Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Dr. Hanmer received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Baystate Medical Center and Tufts New England Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and he is a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Hanmer is an expert in sports medicine with a particular interest in arthroscopic surgery of the hip.
Edward Park, MD, Director of Anesthesia, Outpatient Surgery Center, Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Dr. Park received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Morristown Memorial Hospital and his residency in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Park is board certified in anesthesiology. He has a strong interest in ambulatory anesthesia and has previously served as Director of Anesthesia at two other surgery centers in the greater Boston area.
