Welcome to the Vernon Cancer Center
With recent technological advancements and improvements in early detection, diagnosis and treatment – cancer is now, more than ever, a treatable and survivable disease. Serving Greater Boston communities, The Joan and James Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital offers patients an entire realm of cancer care, expert and innovative services and advanced treatment options. Our mission is to deliver comprehensive, compassionate care while providing a sense of hope and comfort to patients and their families in a setting close to home.
Becky's Story: Battling Breast Cancer During Pregnancy
Becky Eccher was just 34 years old and five weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Becky and her husband share their personal story and reflect on the experiences they had throughout her diagnosis and treatment at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
This year the Vernon Cancer Center turns five! To celebrate that milestone, we have published our first newsletter. The goal is to provide this as a means to keep our referring physicians informed about new treatments, protocols and up-to-date practice guidelines. Additionally, it will keep readers informed about many of the advances in cancer care as well as learning about programs offered at the VCC.

Quality - CoC Award
The Vernon Cancer Center is one of 79 cancer care facilities nationwide that received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. Award criteria were based on qualitative and quantitative surveys conducted last year. The CoC’s Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. The award-winning, cancer-care programs represent approximately 19 percent of programs surveyed by the CoC in 2012.
“These 79 cancer programs surveyed in 2012 currently represent the best of the best—so to speak—when it comes to cancer care,” says Daniel P. McKellar, MD, FACS, Chair of the CoC. “Each of these facilities is not just meeting nationally recognized standards for the delivery of quality cancer care, they are exceeding them.”

The Ladies Knitting Committee, within the Town of Dover’s Council on Aging, is comprised of knitting enthusiasts who started knitting items for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and babies at Newton-Wellesley back in the spring of 2012.
Hundreds of hats, booties and blankets/shawls have since been knitted “with love” and given to cancer patients and newborn/preemie babies at the Hospital.
Thank you, Ladies Knitting Committee, for your incredible generosity!
