Preparing for Surgery
Prior to your surgery date in the Gastrointestinal Surgery service at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, you will be required to schedule pre-admission testing and complete it. During pre-admission testing, you will undergo a chest X-ray and complete labs and an electrocardiogram (EKG) at Newton-Wellesley.
Please note that if you have any testing or labs done at another hospital or clinic, you must have the results sent to our office.
Medical History and Physical
Before your surgery date, you will also meet with our nurse practitioner who will conduct a physical exam and ask about your medical history. It is very important to mention any of your prior medical conditions and surgical procedures. Please also provide us with any medical conditions or surgical treatments your family members have had.
Day Before Surgery
Preparing the skin before surgery can reduce the risk of infection at the surgical site. We will prescribe a skin cleanse with a special soap the day before your scheduled procedure. We will also provide you with additional details about preparation before your procedure. If your surgery requires a bowel prep, consult with your surgeon.
Day of Surgery
You will be admitted to the Hospital on the morning of your surgery. Before admission you will have already completed pre-admission testing.
Your care will be provided by many people, including your surgeon, nurses, patient care assistants, physicians, nurse practitioners, wound ostomy continence nurses, case managers, physical therapists and other providers.
