Medical/Surgical Service

Newton-Wellesley Hospital's inpatient occupational therapists work with adults who have experienced a change in functional abilities when admitted to our medical/surgical floors. Patient diagnoses may include gastric bypass surgery, cancer, cardiopulmonary disorders, acute infections, surgical interventions, or dementia/delirium.

Our inpatient therapists have expertise in the evaluation and treatment of functional limitations and needs related to these diagnoses. These may include:

  • Activities of daily living, such as basic self care and home management skills
  • Home safety needs
  • Recommendations and training in the use of adaptive equipment
  • Upper limb exercise programs
  • Functional transfers and mobility
  • Cognitive impairments including problems with memory, attention or judgment/safety
  • Visual & perceptual impairments impacting daily tasks

Patient and family education are a critical component of occupational therapy intervention. Family/caregiver involvement is particularly important in our Therapeutic Activities Program for individuals with dementia who are at risk for delirium. Research has shown that therapeutic activities can be effective in reducing the incidence and severity of delirium in acute care settings.

Occupational therapists also play an important role in assisting with discharge planning needs. When appropriate, referrals for continued occupational therapy services are completed to ensure continuity of care when patients are discharged from the hospital.

Service Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm, Saturdays & Sunday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
