What is a Pelvic Ultrasound?
A pelvic ultrasound allows visualization of the bladder and the pelvic organs.
In females, the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic structures are evaluated.
In males, ultrasound can evaluate the prostate gland. The kidneys are also examined.
How do I prepare for the exam? (For 18 years old or younger)
You will need to have a full bladder for the exam to allow visualization of the pelvic organs. Empty your bladder one hour prior to your exam and drink 24 ounces (four glasses) of water. Do not empty your bladder again.
How do I prepare for the exam? (For older than 18 years old)
There is no preparation for this exam.
What will happen during the exam?
You will lie down on a table for the exam and the sonographer will put a warm gel on your abdomen. The gel is water-based and will not stain your clothing. The gel maximizes contact between the skin producing high quality images. The sonographer will then move a transducer over the pelvic area in order to obtain the necessary images. When the exam is over, the sonographer will wipe off the gel.
In most women, a transvaginal ultrasound will also be performed. This procedure is similar to an internal exam that is performed at your doctor’s office and is performed after emptying your bladder. A specially designed disinfected transducer will be inserted into your vagina, which allows for better visualization of your pelvic organs.
How long will the procedure take?
The entire exam can take up to 30 minutes.
What will happen after the exam?
After the exam, the technologist will process your images using a computer. A radiologist will evaluate the images within 24 hours and dictate a report. A report will be sent to your physician.
How will I receive my results?
You will get the results of the exam from your doctor.
