How do I make an appointment?
Patients are referred to Pain Management Services by their physicians. Once we receive information about your medical history, medications, recent lab and imaging studies, you may schedule an appointment by calling 617-243-6142. Calls made after 4:00 pm or on weekends and holidays will be addressed the next business day. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm.

What are your hours?
Our hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Procedures are scheduled from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm.
Will my health insurance cover the services you provide?
You must have an insurance referral in place before your visit. Most health insurance plans cover our services but patients should check with their insurer for their financial responsibility.
What happens at my first appointment?
At your initial consultation with a nurse practitioner or physician, your health history and imaging studies will be reviewed and treatment options will be discussed with you and other family members you would like to include. It is important to communicate any questions or concerns that you have about your care. Reports will be available to your referring physician along with follow-up communications about your progress.
On the day of your procedure, a nurse will take your blood pressure, review your medical record and obtain a brief history about your pain. It is important to have an accurate list of the medications you are taking, especially anticoagulant agents (blood thinners). Your physician will obtain your consent for the procedure. After the procedure you will be required to stay 20 minutes or longer for your recovery. Please refer to the individual procedures for more information.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
Most people can drive themselves home after their procedure, but certain procedures and the medications given require that you have a ride home. Please ask when you schedule your appointment.
Can I bring my young children to my appointment?
For your children’s safety, we ask that you do not bring children to your appointment. The hospital environment can be frightening to young children and the staff cannot be responsible for their care during your procedure. If you must bring your children, please provide a responsible adult to care for them during your appointment. We encourage you to use the waiting area for their comfort.
How long is my visit?
You should plan about 90 minutes for a steroid injection and longer for other procedures. Be sure to include time for traffic and parking.
Will my procedure hurt?
Most people will feel temporary discomfort or pain during their procedure. We will make every effort to make you as comfortable as possible throughout your visit.
Will I be awake for the procedure?
Yes, the procedures are performed under local anesthesia so you will be awake. A small amount of anesthetic will be given at the injection site during the procedure. Most injections last only a few minutes.
How soon will I feel better?
It depends on many factors, such as why you are experiencing pain, your amount of pain on the day of treatment, and how long you’ve been having pain. Most people will notice an improvement in their pain within 3-7 days after treatment.
Is there any special preparation for my procedure?
For your safety, it is important for you to tell your doctor if you are feeling sick or taking any antibiotics or blood thinners. If you think you might be pregnant, the procedure should be postponed due to X-ray exposure.
