Permanent Charge Nurse Council
The Permanent Charge Nurse Council (PCN Council) was established in 2006 at the direction of our Nursing Leadership Committee. Its charge is to provide a forum for networking, support and role development of permanent charge nurses throughout the organization. The sessions alternate monthly between afternoon and evening times in an effort to equally meet the scheduling needs of permanent charge nurses (PCN’s) on all shifts.
Recognizing the attributes required of the permanent charge nurse, topics involving such skill development as teamwork, staff motivation and working with challenging individuals have been provided. Guest speakers within Newton-Wellesley and at Partners HealthCare provide educational offerings related to managing individual and hospital risk, domestic violence and sexual assault, ethical dilemmas in the workplace, Patient Progression, promoting a culture of safety in the workplace and ongoing survey readiness.
Discussions are lively and participants offer one another constructive suggestions for approaching a variety of challenges. There is resounding agreement that the greatest benefit of the council is the opportunity it provides PCN’s to engage with peers experiencing similar role expectations and challenges across hospital departments.
