Welcome to the Auerbach Breast Center
The Auerbach Breast Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a multi-disciplinary program for patients in the Greater Boston area with breast-related problems, including a new lump, pain, nipple discharge or an abnormal mammogram. Patients are referred to the center when breast-related problems are detected by their physician.
Our team works in conjunction with multiple departments at Newton-Wellesley Hospital to provide comprehensive, patient-focused screenings for breast cancer and breast disorders. For breast cancer screenings, the Women’s Imaging Center offers mammograms and breast MRIs at three convenient locations. When screenings reveal breast abnormalities, breast diagnostics are performed here at the Auerbach Breast Center.
Becky's Story: Battling Breast Cancer During Pregnancy
Becky Eccher was just 34 years old and five weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Becky and her husband share their personal story and reflect on the experiences they had throughout her diagnosis and treatment at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
Newton-Wellesley is the first hospital to offer 3D mammography, called tomosynthesis, to every patient at every location. The benefits of this advanced technology include:
- A clearer image of breast tissue to help distinguish superimposed tissue from real abnormalities
- A decreased need for further examinations
- Fewer call backs and less anxiety for patients
- Possibility of finding smaller cancers at earlier stages
When a diagnosis of breast cancer is made, patients meet with a multi-disciplinary team of breast cancer specialists – breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and nurses – to discuss treatment options. We then create an individualized treatment program for each patient. Plastic surgeons, physical therapists and social workers are also available to our patients for referral on an individual basis.
In addition to breast cancer screenings and treatment, we offer risk analysis to help determine early on if you are a high risk for breast cancer.
Surgery can play a necessary role in the treatment of breast cancer. Some of the surgeries that are used in the treatment of brast cancer include:
- Mastectomy: Surgically removing all breast tissue
- Lumpectomy: Surgically removing just the tumor
- Breast Reconstruction: Surgically repairing or reconstructing the breast following a mastectomy or lumpectomy
Breast cancer surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is handled by the surgical oncologists at the Vernon Cancer Center.
