Newton-Wellesley Hospital provides free and confidential domestic and sexual violence services for both survivors of domestic and sexual violence and health care providers. The Hospital program works to provide comprehensive, culturally-competent care specific to the needs of the individual survivor.
Domestic violence and sexual trauma affects people of every race, culture, faith, age, gender identity and sexual orientation. People with disabilities, undocumented immigrants and transgender individuals face additional risks.

For Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence
- Crisis intervention
- Safety planning
- Individual counseling
- Advocacy
- Referral to community resources (legal, housing, shelter, immigration, etc.)
- Post-sexual assault assistance including Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Services. Through its participation in the SANE program, the Hospital provides compassionate, survivor-focused medical care and evidence collection services, which are available for adults, adolescents and children.

What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive, manipulative and/or controlling behaviors that serves to isolate or instill fear.

- Is your relationship making you feel scared, confused or nervous?
- Are you frightened by your partner's temper?
- Are you afraid to disagree?
- Do you have to justify everything you do, every place you go or every person you see to avoid your partner's anger?
- Does your partner put you down but then tell you that he or she loves you?
- Have you been forced into having sex when you didn't want to?
- Are you afraid to break up because your partner has threatened to hurt you?
- Does your partner blame his or her behavior on drugs/alcohol?
- Does you partner attempt to undermine your sobriety?
- Does your partner use your immigration status against
you?
What is Sexual Assault?
Sexual assault may include any or all of the following:
- Forced participation in unwanted sexual activities.
- Refusal to practice safer sex.
- Using alcohol and/or other drugs to make someone vulnerable to assault.
- Making public or threatening to make public your sexual history.
- Refusing to respect your sexual orientation and/or gender expression.
- Refusing to honor previously agreed upon boundaries of sex play.
- Forced use of pornography.
Survivors of sexual assault face greater risk of:
- Bleeding and infection
- Painful intercourse
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Unwanted pregnancy
- Sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS
What Should You Do If You Have Been Sexually Assaulted?
- Remember it is NOT your fault.
- Avoid showering, eating, drinking, smoking, douching or
changing your clothes if possible.
- Seek emergency medical treatment.
- If you have already showered, please don’t let that stop you from seeking medical care. Place the clothes you were wearing during the assault in a paper bag and take them to the Hospital with you. Be aware that you do NOT need to inform the police unless you choose to do so. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner services, including evidence collection, are done at the survivor’s request.
How Can Abuse and Violence Affect Your Health?
Many people dealing with the stress of an abusive partner or the after effects of coerced sexual activity experience physical and emotional changes including:
- Sleeplessness
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Panic attacks
- Headaches and/or stomach pains
- Use of drugs and alcohol to cope
