About Infertility

Infertility is a condition of the reproductive system that makes it harder to reproduce, or conceive a child, as defined by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Our gynecologic surgery team provides patients with comprehensive fertility care. We also work with our colleagues at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital to provide world-class reproductive medical care as part of the Mass General Brigham Reproductive Medicine Center.

Advanced fertility care for people who need help conceiving a child

Our fertility experts offer advanced, compassionate care for both women and men affected by infertility.

Whom Does Infertility Affect?

About 12 percent of couples of childbearing age experience infertility. According to the National Institutes of Health:

  • One-third of infertility cases involve a problem with just the man
  • One-third of cases involve a problem with just the woman
  • One-third of cases either involve a problem with both partners or a problem that can’t be identified

Infertility can result from a problem with any one of the factors that are required for a successful conception, including:

  • Healthy egg production
  • Healthy sperm production
  • Unblocked fallopian tubes that allow sperm to reach the egg
  • Sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg
  • Ability of a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus
  • High-quality embryos
