Auerbach Breast Center
The Auerbach Breast Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a multi-disciplinary program for patients in the Greater Boston area with breast-related problems, including a new lump, pain, nipple discharge or an abnormal mammogram. Patients are referred to the center when breast-related problems are detected by their physician.
Breast Screenings and Diagnosis
The Auerbach Breast Center works in conjunction with multiple departments at Newton-Wellesley Hospital to provide comprehensive, patient-focused screenings for breast cancer and breast disorders. For breast cancer screenings, the Women’s Imaging Center offers mammograms and breast MRIs at three convenient locations. When screenings reveal breast abnormalities, breast diagnostics are performed here at the Auerbach Breast Center.
3D Mammography
Newton-Wellesley is the only hospital in the area fully transitioning to Breast Tomosynthesis in Spring 2012. Tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, is a new technology that allows the physician to see thin mammography sections of the entire breast. This results in better detail without the superimposed tissue above and below each section that can hide abnormalities on the traditional two-dimensional image provided by mammography. Tomosynthesis provides physicians with a clearer image of the breast tissue and decreases the need for further examinations.
Breast Cancer Treatment
When a diagnosis of breast cancer is made, patients meet with multi-disciplinary team of breast cancer specialists – breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and nurses - to discuss treatment options. We then create an individualized treatment program for each patient. Plastic surgeons, physical therapists and social workers are also available to our patients for referral on an individual basis. In addition to breast cancer screenings and treatment, we offer risk analysis to help determine early on if you are a high risk for breast cancer. Learn about our breast cancer risk assessment services.
Breast Cancer Surgery
Surgery can play a necessary role in the treatment of breast cancer. Some of the surgeries that are used in the treatment of brast cancer include:
- Mastectomy: Surgically removing all breast tissue
- Lumpectomy: Surgically removing just the tumor
- Breast Reconstruction: Surgically repairing or reconstructing the breast following a mastectomy or lumpectomy
Breast cancer surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is handled by the surgical oncologists at the Vernon Cancer Center. For information on cosmetic breast surgeries such as breast augmentations or breast reductions, contact our Plastic Surgery Department.
